The South Dakota Department of Health and the state’s three major healthcare providers– Avera, Monument and Sanford– came together this week to encourage state residents who haven’t done so yet, to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Dr. David Basel with Avera Health says people have some misperceptions, including that they are immune if they have already had COVID.
Basel says they are concerned with the rise of infections in younger people.
Basel says people are still wrongly comparing COVID to the flu.
In many areas of the state, walk in immunization clinics are available– including one today (April 22) at the Avera St. Mary’s “old” hospital building in Pierre from 4-7:30pm. Clinic participants should use Parking Lot F and enter through Door 8. An entrance for wheelchairs is located off Washington Avenue.
Vaccinations are provided at no cost, but masks are required.
The walk-in appointments are first come, first serve, but you may make an appointment online at Avera.org/covid-vaccine.
Currently, COVID-19 vaccinations in South Dakota are open to anyone age 16 years and older.
