A 26 year old man from Hankinson, ND, faces a handful of charges after a Saturday night (May 1, 2021) pursuit in Hughes, Stanley and Haakon counties.
Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson says approximately 9pm, a County Deputy attempted to stop a 2008 Ford Fusion that was speeding excessively on Highway 14 just east of Pierre. The car did not stop and a pursuit ensued.
The chase went through Pierre and across the Missouri River Bridge into Fort Pierre, then into Stanley County. The vehicle continued westbound on Highways 34/14 at a high rate of speed. There was minimal traffic on the roadway and additional law enforcement agencies assisted in the pursuit.
A Haakon County deputy deployed a tire deflation device at mile marker 159 in Haakon County which caused the vehicle to slow down, but not stop. The driver, Richard Mayer, drove into a pasture and continued eluding officers.
Johnson says a perimeter was set up and the South Dakota Highway Patrol airplane directed law enforcement to the vehicle when it became disabled. Mayer was safely taken into custody.
Along with being arrested on two bench warrants out of Pennington County, Mayer was arrested and charged with:
- Aggravated Eluding
- Reckless Driving
- Obstructing Law Enforcement
- DUI-3rd
- Cancelled Driver’s License
Mayer is currently in the Hughes County Jail. The vehicle was towed.
Assisting agencies were the Pierre Police Department, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Haakon County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
