Social Media has been a good distraction for many of us over the years. I find myself scrolling for hours on Instagram and TikTok looking at all the new content that is produced every day. Well if we put that energy into something else, we could be in better shape.
According to the Daily Mail, we spend an average of 49 minutes a day on social media. That equivalent to around 53 miles a year. If you put that in running terms… that’s two marathons!!!! That’s a lot of thumbs running. Currently, I’m training to run a marathon, and take it from me… 49 minutes of thumb scrolling is way easier than 49 minutes of running! If thumb scrolling could get me ready for my marathon, I’d do way more of it!
Experts say in the article, there’s even a term for using your thumb too much. They are calling it “scrolling thumb” or “texting thumb.” It can lead to problems like arthritis and other medical issues you may see now or down the road. I’ve recently noticed my thumb is getting extremely tired at night and I think this may be the issue. The doctors from the article suggest you change which finger you use while scrolling to avoid these issues. They even recommend texting using different fingers.
I’m going to start treating my thumb like the rest of my body when I work out. What you do to one finger, you must do to the other! That’ll hopefully build up strength and help you down the road!
