South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2021, was 2.01 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was down 2% from June 1, 2020, but up 1% from March 1, 2021.
Breeding hog inventory, at 270,000 head, was down 4% from June 1, 2020, and down 5% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.74 million head, was down 2% from last year, but up 2% from last quarter.
The March – May 2021 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.65 million head, was down 4% from 2020. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 132,000 head, down 5% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high 12.50 for the March – May period, compared to
12.30 last year.
South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 132,000 sows during the June – August 2021 quarter, down 8% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for September – November 2021 are 136,000 sows, down 3% from the actual
farrowings during the same period a year ago.
