Customers of the West River/Lyman Jones Rural Water system– including people in Fort Pierre– are still under an emergency water use restriction today (June 29).
Due to a Mni Wiconi core pipeline leak in Fort Pierre, the City of Fort Pierre and WR/LJ Rural Water have issued the system wide restrictions for all users until further notice. The water line that feeds Fort Pierre is currently off and the town is operating on its reserves.
In a Facebook post about 10:45 CT this morning, WR/LJ said efforts are ongoing to repair the Mni Wiconi core pipeline in Fort Pierre. While the work is done, the water line that supplies WR/LJ is shut down.
Portions of the WR/LJ system are expected to experience low pressures and outages while the Mni Wiconi system is shut down. The areas most likely to be impacted first will be the Vivian area, Saddle Butte area, Fort Pierre North area and Moenville area. WR/LJ officials estimate those areas will run out of water early to mid-afternoon today.
WR/LJ anticipates the Mni Wiconi pipeline will be repaired today and the system will be turned back on sometime tonight. In the meantime, customers SHOULD NOT:
-
water lawns
-
wash vehicles
-
wash pavement or other surfaces
-
fill pools
-
fill spray tanks
-
water plots at Scotty Philips Cemetery
-
use water for other unnecessary purposes
These emergency restrictions are necessary to ensure water is available for citizens, businesses, livestock and other primary needs. The entities appreciate your understanding and reduced water use while the lines are being repaired.
