The South Dakota Department of Health has confirmed one case of the Delta variant of COVID-19 (B.1.617.2 variant) has been detected in Edmunds County.
The findings were verified by an out-of-state laboratory.
Sec. of Health Kim Malsam-Rysdon says the Delta variant appears to be more easily spread from person-to-person, is less responsive to existing treatments and reduces the protection of the COVID-19 vaccine. She says despite there only being one confirmed case in the state so far, it’s safe to assume other cases may also exist.
Malsam-Rysdon says while COVID-19 case counts remain at an all-time low since the beginning of the pandemic, virus variants remain a threat that can be diminished by everyone getting vaccinated.
The Delta variant was first detected in India in late 2020 and first detected in the United States in March 2021. For additional information on all the variants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, click here.
