The annual Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Cleanup event at Pierre will be held today (July 7) from 5-8pm.
Paul Lepisto with the Izaak Walton League says cleanup will be coordinated out of Downs Marina in Griffin Park.
Lepisto says volunteers are needed to help pick up litter and trash from areas along the river in Pierre and Fort Pierre.
Lepisto says volunteers will get dirty so wear work-appropriate clothing. Durable shoes or boots are recommended– no flip flops or sandals. You can bring work gloves, and make sure you have sunglasses and sunscreen. If you want to go out on the water and you have your own life jacket, please bring it. There will be life jackets, gloves and trash bags provided for the volunteers. He says additional boats and pontoons are also needed for the cleanup.
Again, volunteers must register, which can be done by:
-
emailing Paul Lepisto at plepisto@iwla.org
-
calling 605-220-1219
-
in person July 7 at 4:30pm at Griffin Park
In 10 cleanups since 2009 over 700 volunteers have removed 21 tons of litter and trash from along the river. The trash collected, either by boat or land-based crews, will be brought to Downs Marina where it will be sorted, then disposed of by the City of Pierre.
The Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Cleanup is coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Army Corps of Engineers and the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre. Many other businesses and organizations also contribute to the cleanup.
