The U.S. is now in FIRST place with 30 medals, including 10 gold. Here’s a breakdown of yesterday’s events.
Carissa Moore won gold in surfing in women’s shortboard. The women’s gymnastics team took silver after Simone Biles dropped out for mental health reasons. Russia won the gold. The U.S. softball team had to settle for silver too, losing to Japan 2 to 0.
Women’s swimming added a bunch of medals thanks to Katie Ledecky, Erica Sullivan, Alex Walsh, and Kate Douglass, including gold and silver in the first ever women’s 1,500-meter, and silver and bronze in the 200-meter individual medley.
We also took silver in women’s synchronized diving . . . team dressage . . . and mixed air rifle.

1. USA: 30 . . . 10 gold, 11 silver, 9 bronze.
2. China: 24 . . . 11 gold, 5 silver, 8 bronze.
3. Japan: 20 . . . 11 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze.
4. Russia: 19 . . . 7 gold, 8 silver, 4 bronze.
5. Australia: 15 . . . 6 gold, 1 silver, 8 bronze.
