Fort Pierre is making progress toward coming into compliance with FEMA regulations for the National Flood Insurance Program.
Public works director Rick Hahn told the city council during this week’s (Aug. 2) meeting, FEMA is providing some technical assistance to get the issues resolved.
Last month, a FEMA representative said he believed the nine violations yet to be resolved were all in residential areas.
Fort Pierre has until mid-October (Oct. 14, 2021) to either remediate all violations or prepare a compliance plan approved by FEMA or the town will be placed on probationary status.
Should the town be placed on probation in October, flood insurance coverage would remain available, however, a $50 surcharge will be added to the premium of each new and renewed flood insurance policy sold within the community for at least one year from the effective date of probation.
As of July 9, 2021, there were 103 NFIP participating insurance policies in Fort Pierre with a total coverage of more than $28.2 million.
On the FEMA Map Service Center website there’s a tool you can use to look at the flood risk of any property by entering the location information.
