After Day 12 of the Olympics, the U.S. was still leading in overall medals. But China was in a close second, and still leading in golds.
American wrestler Tamyra Mensah-Stock won gold in women’s freestyle yesterday. And we picked up several medals in track-and-field, including a gold by 19-year-old Athing Mu. She won the women’s 800-meter. Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad took gold and silver in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. We also snagged a few silvers in men’s hurdles, pole vault, and women’s long jump. And we added a bunch of bronze medals, including the one Simone Biles won in the balance beam early yesterday morning.
Here’s the latest medal count we saw.
1. USA: 76 . . . 25 gold, 29 silver, 22 bronze.
2. China: 69 . . . 32 gold, 21 silver, 16 bronze.
3. Russia: 52 . . . 13 gold, 21 silver, 18 bronze.
4. Great Britain: 45 . . . 13 gold, 17 silver, 15 bronze.
