Construction of Pierre’s new outdoor pool at Griffin Park is starting.
City Engineer John Childs says the public should expect a noticeable increase in truck traffic in and around the construction site. He says the first step is excavating about 15,000 yards of existing soil and replacing it with suitable fill material. Then, an additional 20,000 yards of soil will be brought in and placed at the construction site.
Childs says at the peak of the earthwork, the public can expect up to 100 loads daily. He says to help manage the additional truck traffic, a project haul route has been established.
Trucks will come across the Missouri River Bridge and travel east to the Ree Street stoplight. From there, they’ll head south to Missouri Avenue and enter Griffin Park from the south. He says they’re trying to keep the trucks on the state highway and out of residential areas as much as possible.
Childs says other safety measures will also be put in place throughout this stage of construction. No on-street parking will be permitted on Dakota Avenue between Crow Street and Capitol Creek. Griffin Park road, between Crow Street and Capitol Creek will be closed. Additionally, portions of Griffin Park adjacent to the construction site will be closed and secured by a safety fence.
The earthwork is expected to begin this week and continue into November.
AGE Corporation of Fort Pierre was awarded the earthwork contract in July.
