Based on August 1, 2021, conditions, South Dakota’s 2021 corn crop is forecast at 738 million bushels, up 1% from last year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 5.55 million acres, up 23% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 133 bushels per acre, down 29 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 213 million bushels, 5% below last year. Area for harvest, at 5.45 million acres, is up 11% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 39 bushels per acre, down 6.5 bushels from last year.
South Dakota’s 2021 winter wheat crop is forecast at 29.2 million bushels, down 16% from last year’s crop. Harvested acreage is estimated at 680,000 acres, up 13% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, down 15 bushels from last year.
Other spring wheat production is forecast at 16.8 million bushels, down 53% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 700,000 acres, down 8% from a year ago. The yield, forecast at 24 bushels per acre, is down 23 bushels from last year.
Oat production, at 3.44 million bushels, is down 68% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 80,000 acres, down 43% from a year ago. The yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, down 34 bushels from last year.
Sorghum yield is forecast at 64 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 210,000 acres, up 31% from a year ago. Production of 13.4 million bushels is up 18% from a year ago.
Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.60 million tons, down 51% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.60 million acres, down 11% from 2020. Expected yield, at 1.00 tons per acre, is down 0.80 ton from last year. All other hay production is forecast at 1.15 million tons,
down 46% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.15 million acres, down 8% from a year ago. Expected yield, at 1.00 tons per acre, is down 0.70 ton from last year.
