The Dakota Wesleyan University Learn & Earn program at Capital City Campus in Pierre has been awarded a $12,000 grant.
The money will be used to provide students with a laptop to use while enrolled in the program which provides the opportunity for students to experience a hands-on, real-world simulation of the job place. It offers a defined path to an associate or bachelor’s degree. After the first four months, students work in their paid internships two days a week. After eight months, the internship increases to three days a week with students spending two days at Capital City Campus. This entire program can be accomplished in 16 months.
DWU vice-president of admissions and marketing Fredel Thomas says the value of an educated, available workforce cannot be overstated. She says by providing a laptop as part of enrollment in the Learn & Earn program, a significant cost burden is removed, making the course affordable for a larger number of people.
Jessica Carr is the DWU Learn & Earn program coordinator. Classes begin Aug. 23 at the Capital City Campus in Pierre.
