Traffic speed limit zones surrounding all of Pierre’s elementary schools are being activated this morning (Aug. 17, 2021).
Pierre Police captain Bryan Walz says school doesn’t actually start until Thursday, but they are turning the lights on a couple of days early to make sure they operate properly and to get people back into the habit of slowing down in school zones. He says when activated, the lights indicate the speed limit in those areas drops to 15 mph.
Walz says schedules are a little different at each of the elementary schools, so some school speed zone lights will start as early at 7:20 in the morning and some will be on as late as 3:30 in the afternoon. He says the zones will be active primarily in the morning when school is starting, over the lunch hour and when classes are ending for the day. When the school zone lights aren’t flashing, motorists are permitted to drive the regularly signed speed limit.
Walz says the lights are designed to remind motorists to slow down for the safety of children coming to and from school. He says the police presence in the school zones will also be enhanced to help remind people to slow down in school zones.
School zone lights can be found near all three public elementary schools, as well as Pierre Indian Learning Center, For His Glory School and St. Joseph’s School.
