RAPID CITY – Michael Brooks will not return as girls basketball head coach at Rapid City Stevens in 2021-22.
Brooks told the Rapid City Journal that he won’t return due to a personnel decision made by Rapid City Area Schools. He told the newspaper, “I gave them some great reasons and really wanted an opportunity to stay, either in the role that I had applied for and that I had gained in April, or have a different type of role, and they told me that it was not something that could happen at this time. Unfortunately, that is my job and basketball is my passion, so that kind of sets us up for not a lot of great success as a family here in Rapid City if I can’t have the opportunity to do what I want to do.”
Brooks was 71-26 in four seasons as Stevens’ head coach, including 17-6 last season, when the Raiders, after beating Pierre in the SoDak 16 upset Harrisburg and Brandon Valley to reach the AA state championship game, where they lost to Sioux Falls Washington.
Brooks was Stevens head coach from 2016-19, stepped down to become a boys assistant in 2019-20, then returned as girls head coach in 2020-21. He is a former head coach of the women’s program at Bradley University.
