YANKTON – After one quick Pierre strike, Yankton never recovered Friday.
Lincoln Kienholz hit Jack Merkwan with a 72-yard touchdown pass on the game’s first play, helping Pierre to a 24-10 win over Yankton at Crane-Youngworth Field.
Kienholz, who rushed for 222 yards on 31 carries, later carried for two scores, the second ending a 12-play drive that gave Pierre a 24-3 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Cole Peterson kicked a 36-yard field goal for Pierre, who improved to 4-1. Yankton is now 2-3.
Pierre scored again on its second possession, with Kienholz ending a 69-yard drive with a six-yard TD keeper.
Yankton’s first points came on a Trevor Paulsen 37-yard field goal with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.
Peterson’s field goal came in the first minute of the fourth quarter, with Kienholz’s one-yard touchdown keeper coming with 4:11 left.
Yankton closed the scoring on a Rugby Ryken 36-yard touchdown pass to Cody Oswald with 1:24 remaining.
