The Pierre Community Orchard Project (1201 East Sully Avenue) was established in 2018 and people can check out its progress today (Oct. 11, 2021) during an open house type event.
City commissioner Todd Johnson says guided tours will be offered from 4-6pm.
The Pierre Community Orchard is situated on 6,400 square feet of city-owned land and features 22 fruit trees including pear, peach, plum, apple and cherry.
The orchard has started producing fruit. If the plants remain fruitful next year, community members will be invited to harvest the produce for the local food pantry, community meals or personal use.
The Pierre Community Orchard Project was established through a partnership between Girl Scouts Troop #40080 and the City of Pierre.
The event is sponsored by the City of Pierre Arbor Board and the Pierre Community Orchard Project.
