PIERRE – LizBeth Crosby of cross country and Trey Lewis of football are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Governor Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 9.
Crosby was 16th in the ESD cross country meet, a pleasant surprise for Head Coach Jim Keyes.
Keyes said, “The thing that made this race so awesome was she was probably 30th on paper going into the race based on times coming into the ESD. LizBeth decided she had nothing to lose and went for it early and ran with other girls she has never ran with before. If you want to talk about determination and guts – that would be this performance by LizBeth! LizBeth is only a freshman and has been either our first or second runner all season. I had a coach approach me during the race and asked me who that first girl was from Pierre, because she ran a very aggressive race.”
Lewis, coming back from on off-season injury, rushed 18 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns in Pierre’s 52-42 home win over Watertown. Head Coach Steve Steele said, “It’s not an easy thing to deal with an injury and especially to do so while not being able to practice or play. But Trey has stayed the course and continued to rehab to the best of his ability and had an amazing game that helped us defeat Watertown to keep us on track towards our team goals. We are very proud of Trey’s efforts as he was prepared for his moment when it came and made the most of it.”
