PIERRE – Reese Terwilliger of Governor Volleyball and Jace Charron of Governor Football are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 16.
Terwilliger had 13 kills, eight blocks and an ace on October 12 as the Governors rallied from 9-2 down in the fifth set to beat Harrisburg 16-14 in the fifth set at Riggs High Gym. Head Coach Tiffany Stoeser praised Terwilliger: “Possibly the hardest worker, Reese improves each day in practice on both her physical and mental game. As an undersized middle hitter, Reese is strong for her age and a surprise to most teams in her blocking and swinging ability. She continues to improve and is they type of athlete all coaches want on their floor. Reese consistently leads by example.”
Charron had to enter the Governors’ October 15 win against Aberdeen Central on the offensive line to replace an injured player. Head Coach Steve Steele said: “Having to adjust the offensive line in the middle of a game is one of the most difficult things to do in football. Many positions are more individual where you are blocking/running/catching and don’t have to directly work with others. The offensive line is not that way. We always preach to be ready for your moment to make a difference whenever you’re called upon to do so. Many kids who aren’t starting at a given position may not work as hard or think that they don’t need to be ready…until they are needed in a major game situation. Jace is a fantastic example of continuing to work your tail off, prepare mentally as if you were a starter, and then shining brightest when your moment came. He blended in immediately and did a wonderful job keeping our offense rolling and not missing a beat. While there is no statistic for this, it is a moment that coach’s are most proud of to see kids work hard without any recognition, and then to finally see it pay off.”
