SIOUX FALLS – In his final high school cross country meet, Pierre senior Hayden Shaffer finished fifth on Saturday to lead the Governor boys to a fourth-place team finish at the SDHSAA Boys AA Cross Country Championship at Yankton Trail Park.
Shaffer, who was seventh in the 2020 state meet, ran the 5K course in 16:23.40. It’s the 14th top-10 finish at state by a Governor runner and the first top-five finish since Alec Espeland ran second in 2008.
The fourth-place team finish is the best for the Pierre boys since 2008.
