PIERRE – Volleyball setter Aleise Christopherson and the Governor boys golf team have been named as the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 30.
Christopherson’s contribution was noted by Head Coach Tiffany Stoeser: “Early in the season, we identified that we would benefit from always having three hitters in the front row. To do that, we needed two setters in the lineup. We turned to Aleise, a sophomore who had not even set in a JV game in the past, to take on that role. Throughout the season, she has grown to be able to handle that role, but in addition is also one of our strongest back row defenders. Against Brookings, Aleise dug up all the outside attacks that were placed down the line. That was a key defensive effort that we had been lacking up until that game. Aleise’s reaction time is so quick that she can stare down the face of opposing teams’ biggest hitters. Aside from her defensive efforts, the energy Aleise brings to the floor and excitement after each point is unmatched and something that keeps her teammates excited point after point. Aleise is one of the most coachable athletes on the floor and demonstrates what ‘effort’ should look like in the game of volleyball.”
In early October, Pierre’s boys golf team finished sixth at the AA state tournament with 641, 35 shots better than 2020 and 75 shots better than 2019. Sawyer Sonnenschein shot a 73 on the final day to finish 13th. Luke Olson shot two rounds in the 70s and finished 16th. Head Coach Chris Swiden said, “This team has improved so much over the past two years. We have a very young team that is eager to get better and I know they are going to do whatever it takes to continue climbing that leaderboard and get some more names added to the rock at Hillsview!”
