The Pierre City Commission has approved (Nov. 30, 2021) a request to bid the extension of Black Hills Drive.
The street, located in northeast Pierre, will expand by 514 feet to connect to Arthur Avenue.
According to City Engineer John Childs, the expansion project has been under consideration for a while.
“With the continued development of that commercial corridor, we really need a safer, better way for traffic to exit on and off the highway,” said Childs. “The development of a loop will help with traffic flow and any emergency response needs that could arise.”
Childs went on to say that development begets development.
“The project includes water, waste water, curb and gutter, and storm sewer. Once you develop out utilities, it makes the area more appealing for further commercial development.”
Bids are due Dec. 22, 2021. If a favorable bid is received, the project will begin this coming construction season.
