JANUARY 7, 2022:
A former Pierre City Commissioner has declared his candidacy for District 24’s seat in the South Dakota Senate.
Republican Jim Mehlhaff is currently the Financial Supervisor for the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation’s Division of Insurance, but will be retiring this spring. He says the state legislature needs to take care of state employees.
Another concern Mehlhaff has is the number of state jobs relocating to places outside of the Pierre/Fort Pierre area.
Mehlhaff considers himself a conservative.
Mary Duvall is currently the Senator for District 24. She has confirmed to DRG Media Group that she will seek re-election, which sets up a republican party primary between Duvall and Mehlhaff in June (June 7, 2022).
