UPDATE JANUARY 13, 2022:
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An investigation has found that Utah police made “several unintentional mistakes” when they stopped Gabby Petito and her boyfriend before she was killed in what became a high-profile missing person case. The independent report released Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2022) examines a stop by police in the tourist town of Moab on Aug. 12, 2021. They allowed the couple to leave after requiring them to spend a night apart. Body camera video of a visibly upset Petito was widely viewed as the investigation unfolded and raised questions about whether a more robust police response could have prevented her death.
OCTOBER 12, 2022:
JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — A coroner in Wyoming says slain cross-country traveler Gabby Petito died as a result of strangulation. The 22-year-old woman’s body was found last month near an undeveloped camping area in remote northern Wyoming along the border of Grand Teton National Park. Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue said in a news conference Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2021) he was prevented by Wyoming law from saying more about the case. The coroner previously classified Petito’s death as a homicide, but he had not disclosed how she was killed pending further autopsy results. Petito’s boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, is considered a person of interest in her disappearance and remains unaccounted for.
