UPDATE JANUARY 31, 2022:
A state prison inmate who failed to return to his assigned housing unit after a work release shift earlier this month is back in custody.
Inmate Jerald Brown was arrested Jan. 30, 2022, and is currently being held in the Pennington County Jail.
Brown left the Rapid City Community Work Center to go to his work release job Jan. 13 but failed to return to the Work Center at the appointed time.
JANUARY 14, 2022:
A minimum-security state prison inmate has been placed on escape status.
Inmate Jerald Brown left the Rapid City Community Work Center to go to his work release job Jan. 13, 2022. He failed to return to the Work Center at the appointed time. Brown, age 38, is Native American. He is 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighs approximately 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Brown is serving multiple sentences from Pennington County for possession of a controlled substance.

Failure to return to custody following an assignment constitutes second-degree escape, a Class 5 felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
