Here are some Feel Good Friday Stories to put some positivity in your day!
1. A four-year-old near Chicago named Everly Backe was born with a rare heart condition, and had to have open-heart surgery three days after she was born. So she’s got a big scar on her chest, and her dad Matt was worried she might get self-conscious. So in solidarity, he went and got a tattoo on his chest that’s an exact replica of her scar. He says it’s the only tattoo he’s ever gotten, because he never wanted one until now. And she appreciates the gesture, but her immediate reaction was, “stop copying me.”
2. Two train operators in England just got married. They drive different trains and hardly ever see each other. But they locked eyes one day and felt a connection. He says he still can’t believe she went out with him, because she’s way out of his league.
3. “The Washington Post” just did a big story on a high school coach in Minnesota named Mike Dreier, who’s 70 now. But back when he was 28, he took in a sophomore student named Earl Rich who’d been in foster care his whole life. Earl lived with him for three years, and Mike basically became his dad. But that’s not where the story ends. Earl went to college, got into real estate, and started a family. He’s 56 now, and has four daughters, all between 15 and 19. Meanwhile, Mike’s still coaching. And this past year, he got to coach ALL FOUR of them at once. They play basketball, and there was a year of overlap where they all played together. So it was a pretty crazy full-circle moment. Mike’s also the winningest girls’ high school basketball coach in state history.
4. A news station in Canada did a big profile on a woman in Saskatoon named Simone Kuchartz. She’s 99 years old and refuses to stop bowling. She does “duckpin” bowling, which uses a lighter ball, but it’s still impressive at her age. She has to walk up to the line with a cane now, and still goes every week.
5. “USA Today” just did a big story on a non-profit in Delaware called Maggie & Friends that makes all-natural dog treats called Waggies. They’re special, because all of the employees who make them have Down syndrome, or other disabilities. The woman who runs it says most of them eventually go on to work in kitchens and restaurants.
6. A seven-year-old hockey fan in Michigan named Keegan Williams has been skating since he was three. But he hasn’t gotten out much since he was diagnosed with leukemia in 2018. So Make-A-Wish just did something pretty cool for him. They built a little hockey rink in his backyard and surprised him with it last Friday. They also brought in the mascot for the Grand Rapids Griffins to play goalie. But the best news is Keegan’s on the mend and should finish his cancer treatments in April.
7. A postal worker in New Hampshire named Kayla Berridge was delivering mail last Thursday, and noticed an older lady on her route hadn’t grabbed her mail in four days. So she called for a wellness check and ended up saving the woman’s life. She’s in her 80s. It turned out she’d fallen three days earlier, and was pinned down by random junk that fell on top of her. Doctors treated her for hypothermia and dehydration, but her family says she’s recovering well.
8. Someone nominate this lady for Aunt of the Year: A woman on Twitter was talking to her nephew, who was about to turn ten. And he was sad that he’d never seen a limousine in real life. So she surprised him on his birthday by picking him up from SCHOOL in one. And the whole thing is on video
9. A 16-year-old kid near Philly named Cory Hemberger saved two younger kids who fell through an icy pond last week. He was out playing hockey when he heard the first kid fall in. Then the kid’s friend tried to save him, and he fell in too. So Cory got as close as he could, and used his hockey stick to pull them out.
