SIOUX FALLS – The initial standard for South Dakota girls high school wrestling has been set by the Pierre Governors.
On Friday, Pierre won the first girls team championship at the SDHSAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Denny Sanford Premier Center, outlasting Canton with 146 points to the C-Hawks’ 129. Cierra McFarling repeated as 285-pound state champion, registering pins in all three of her matches, including the title-match win over Kiara King of Canton 1:07 into the second period.
132-pounder Gianna Stangeland also made the title match in her weight class, but was pinned by Taylor Graveman of Spearfish.
Sydney Uhrig and Abbi Lewis scored third-place finishes. Emalee Larson and Marlee Shorter were fourth in their weights. Ireland Templeton had a fifth-place finish and Hattie Baldwin was sixth at her weight.
A “welcome home” celebration for the Governor girls will be held on Monday evening at 6:00 PM at the Riggs High Gym.
