SIOUX FALLS – Up at one point by 18 and still up 12 with two and a half minutes left in the fourth quarter, Pierre Governor Boys Basketball’s chance at a state tournament berth appeared very good.
Then, thanks to crucial free throw misses by the Governors and clutch shots by Jefferson, the Cavaliers eventually took that hope away from Pierre.
Sioux Falls Jefferson rallied to defeat Pierre Saturday 79-74 in double overtime in the AA Boys SoDak 16 at Jefferson High School to give the Cavaliers a state tournament berth in the first season of the program.
After two free throw misses by Pierre with five seconds left in regulation, Griffin Wilde took the rebound, then hit a coast-to-coast layup to tie the game at 64 and force overtime.
Each team scored six points in the first four extra minutes.
In the second overtime, Pierre led 74-73 before Dawson Sechser made a steal, then hit a layup with 1:40 left to give Jefferson (13-8) a lead it would not again relinquish, 75-74. Following another steal, Beau Giblin hit a three-pointer with 34 seconds left to increase the Cavalier lead to 78-74.
Lincoln Kienholz scored 31 points with 13 rebounds for Pierre (9-12). Jackson Edman scored 12. Matthew Hanson, in his final game as a Governor, scored 11.
