State Senator Mary Duvall of Pierre is running for re-election for the lone senate seat for District 24, which now includes Haakon, Hughes, Hyde, Stanley and Sully counties.
Duvall, a republican, is finishing her first term in the Senate, after serving the citizens in central South Dakota for four terms in the House. She says she’s been an advocate for state employees, agriculture, transportation and education and is asking voters for “the opportunity to continue working for them.”
Duvall says she’s proud of the fact that the 2022 Legislature approved a 6% wage increase for state employees, teachers and health care providers. She’s also proud of the significant investments in infrastructure for water, housing and higher education that were passed this session.
Duvall chairs the Senate Transportation Committee. She also serves on the State Affairs, Ag and Natural Resources and Retirement Laws committees.
This past summer Duvall chaired the Senate Legislative Redistricting Committee which added Haakon County to District 24. In addition, she serves on the Water Development Oversight Committee which will be monitoring the $600 million investment in water, wastewater, storm water and nonpoint source pollution projects in South Dakota.
In January (2022), former Pierre City Commissioner and fellow republican Jim Mehlhaff declared his candidacy for District 24’s Senate seat, setting up a republican primary between Duvall and Mehlhaff in June (June 7, 2022). Mehlhaff is currently the Financial Supervisor for the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation’s Division of Insurance, but is retiring this spring.
