If there’s an area of the grocery store where we’re NOT likely to try something new . . . it’s the PRODUCE section. Most of us stick with what we know, and save our adventurousness for . . . the latest flavor of Oreos. In a new poll, 38% of people say they’re not interested in trying new vegetables because they’re “too picky” . . . and 16% say they won’t buy a new kind of vegetable because they don’t know how to cook them.
Because of that, 62% said they always buy the same veggies when shopping for produce. The most popular ones for EVERY grocery trip are potatoes and lettuce, followed by onion . . . carrots . . . peppers . . . and corn. The poll found that broccoli is the veggie that the most Americans are willing to eat, followed by carrots . . . spinach . . . sweet potatoes . . . and asparagus.
But there IS some benefit to going outside your comfort zone. 57% of people say they’ve tried a new vegetable that tasted better than expected. And 31% said eating a balanced diet with a lot of vegetables makes them feel “empowered.”
