Time for your weekly edition of Feel Good Friday Stories…
1. A 64-year-old guy in Maryland played the lottery using his mom’s birthday and won $50,000. (His numbers were 8-1-3-3-3 for August 13th, 1933.)
2. A Starbucks barista named Emily Mejia has a 13-year-old sister who got a cancer diagnosis last year, and chemo didn’t work. So doctors started her on immunotherapy, which DID work. And there’s a great video of Emily finding out. Her mom went to Starbucks while she was working the drive-thru . . . played it cool and ordered a coffee . . . then let her know her sister is CANCER-FREE. (Here’s the video.)
3. A Louisiana man named Daniel Duplantier jumped into action to rescue a young boy from alligator-infested waters. A Facebook post by the Westwego Volunteer Fire Company said the five-year-old boy fell into a canal in the city of Westwego near a pumping station as Duplantier was alligator watching. He acted fast and pulled the boy out of the water, and rescue crews then came to help bring the child safely back across the canal.
4. A horse fell into someone’s backyard pool on Long Island, New York, falling through to the water underneath when it tried to walk across the pool’s cover. The Bohemia Fire Department responded to the residents’ call and were able to save to horse. The fire department said in a Facebook post, “Crews . . . worked together to move the horse to the shallow end of the water and freed her from the cover.” The horse was guided up the stairs in the shallow end of the pool and didn’t appear to be injured
5. Someone surprised their grandmother by giving her one of the pews from the church she’s gone to most of her life. She got married there, and saw her daughter get married there too. But it recently had to be demolished, so they saved one of the pews for her.
6. A video of a high school senior named Jennifer Zhang is going viral, because she applied to a bunch of Ivy League schools and kept getting rejected . . . until she opened her very last letter. She got accepted to Penn, and will be the first person in her family to go to college.
7. A bus driver in Ohio had a medical emergency last Thursday, and a fifth-grader named Sujaan Singh saved the day. He realized what was happening . . . got behind the wheel . . . and hit the brakes before the bus crashed into a streetlight.
8. At Mark Twain elementary school in Bettendorf, Iowa has been enjoying this all year: Someone’s been hiding rubber duckies around the school every day since the start of the school year, and no one knows who. They stopped counting after a while, but say it’s easily over 200 rubber ducks now. The kids love it, and the teachers are finding ways to incorporate it into their lessons. For example, if they read enough books, they get to take a picture with the ducks.
9. A small dog fell off a boat near Florida this month, and her owner didn’t realize until it was too late. She’s a one-year-old corgi named Jessica. But the good news is she’s okay . . . after swimming SEVEN MILES to get back to shore.
