Representative Mike Weisgram of Fort Pierre has officially announced his re-election bid for one of District 24’s two spots in the South Dakota House of Representatives.
Weisgram is finishing his first term in the House. He joins a republican primary field that includes fellow incumbent Will Mortenson and challengers Jim Sheehan and Mary Weinheimer.
Weisgram says the experience he’s gained over the last two years makes him well positioned to advocate for the best interests of the residents of Hughes, Stanley, Sully, Hyde and Haakon counties. He says he will encourage legislation favoring small businesses, local government, workforce development and increasing housing opportunities.
Weisgram has served on the House Commerce and Energy and Local Government committees as well as serving on the 2021 Legislative Summer Study committee on Workforce/Affordable/Attainable Housing opportunities. He also serves on the Water Development Oversight Committee that monitors investments made through the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources for water, wastewater and storm sewer projects in South Dakota.
Weisgram has been a small business owner and currently serves as the Chair of the Governing Board of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. Weisgram and his wife Judy are retired and reside in Fort Pierre. They have two married daughters and six grandchildren.
On the District 24 Senate side, incumbent Mary Duvall faces a republican primary challenge in Jim Mehlhaff. The filing deadline has passed and no democrats turned in petitions to run for either the House or Senate in District 24. Independents can turn in petitions until April 26, 2022.
This will be the first election after the redistricting process set new legislative boundaries in South Dakota. District 24 now includes Haakon County along with Hughes, Hyde, Stanley and Sully counties.
The primary election will be held June 7, 2022. Early voting starts April 22, 2022.
