UPDATE FEBRUARY 10, 2022:
The search for a 70 year old man from Wakpala last seen on Lake Oahe near Mobridge Jan. 27, 2022, has been suspended until the ice melts off that segment of the Missouri River.
Corson County Sheriff Alan Dale says they believe Clyde Oswald is most likely in the water because there’s no indication he drove away and his 1996, green Ford Explorer is also missing. Dale says the search will resume when they can safely deploy boats to access areas they haven’t been unable to get to.
The Corson County Sheriff’s Office and Central Diver’s, LLC, from Pierre led yesterday’s (Feb. 9, 2022) search.
Central Divers owner Caleb Gilkerson, who volunteered his time and equipment for the search, says he’s primarily used a magnetometer (mag-na-tom-eter) on the surface of the water. It’s a tool used in oil and gas fields for locating pipes and other related objects. He says remote operated vehicles (ROVs) have also been used.
At some point, emergency responders from around the state have assisted in the search. They include the South Dakota Highway Patrol Air Wing, Standing Rock Game & Fish, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Civil Air Patrol, Carlson Services, Pierre Fire & Rescue, Pennington County/Rapid City Search & Rescue, Brown County Search & Rescue, Codington County Search & Rescue, Walworth County Office of Emergency Management, Corson County Office of Emergency Management and the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 9, 2022:
A diving company from Pierre is leading the search for a 70 year old man from Wakpala last seen on Lake Oahe near Mobridge Jan. 27, 2022.
Authorities believe Clyde Oswald is most likely in the water because there’s no indication he drove away. Oswald’s 1996, green Ford Explorer is also missing.
Central Divers, LLC, owner Caleb Gilkerson is volunteering his time and equipment for the search. He says one complication is they didn’t know exactly where to begin.
A magnetometer is a tool used in oil and gas fields for locating pipes and other related objects. It’s used on the surface, not under the water.
High winds have stalled the search for a few days, but Gilkerson says they hope to do more searching today (Feb. 9, 2022).
Gilkerson says another challenge of this search area is the depth of the Missouri River and unstable ice conditions because of unseasonably warm temperatures.
Gilkerson says volunteers from all over the state have come to help.
Gilkerson and his team also led the search for Day County resident Amy Dougherty who went missing during a blizzard December 23, 2020. They found her body Jan. 29, 2021.

Corson County Sheriff Alan Dale says Central Divers is working on getting more help and resources from other dive teams. They are working on a plan to be able to search a larger area of water. Dale says they believe Clyde Oswald is most likely in the water because there’s no indication he drove away. Oswald’s 1996, green Ford Explorer is also missing.
Dale says high winds and unstable ice conditions are making the search even more challenging.
