The SD Discovery Center in Pierre is celebrating the opening of its new Treehouse by staying open until 6pm today (an extra hour) in honor of Arbor Day in South Dakota (April 29, 2022).
As part of Arbor Day activities, some elementary school students in Pierre and Stanley County received a bare root tree to take home and plant.
Art Smith is a long-time member of the Pierre city Arbor Board and the owner of East Pierre Landscape and Garden Center. He says the trees being handed out are one of his favorites.
Also today, a new, 8-foot cottonwood tree was planted in Mayor’s Grove. This tree is added as a part of the Tree City USA program.
Finally, at 5:30pm, the Rotary Club of Pierre-Fort Pierre will host a social, which is open to the public. Bare root trees will be available to attendees for planting and there will be a dedication of the exhibit with a plaque.
