This year’s (July 6, 2022) Pierre-Fort Pierre Missouri River Cleanup resulted in a record 4.14 tons of litter, trash and other debris picked up from areas along the River.
The effort, conducted by 68 volunteers in water and land-based crews, cleaned up areas from just above Oahe Dam to past Farm Island.
The trash was hauled to Down’s Marina where it was sorted then properly disposed of by the City of Pierre. This year’s cleanup gathered 2.9 tons of rubble and debris, 1580 pounds of litter and trash, 800 pounds of scrap metal and 100 pounds of tires.
The clean-up was coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Fish and Wildlife Service and the cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
In 12 cleanups conducted since 2009, nearly 27 tons of trash have been collected from along the River. The volunteers enjoyed a picnic supper in Griffin Park with food generously donated by Drifters, Domino’s, Gator’s, Jake’s, La Minestra, Longbranch, Perkins, Pizza Hut, Pizza Ranch, Red Rossa and Richie Z’s. Eagle Sales, Arctic-Glacier Ice and the Pierre Fire Department also contributed to the effort.
