There are a number of boys and young men who have been spending time playing baseball this summer in Mobridge as related by Don Flaherty, who teaches middle school math at Mobridge Pollock School.
His presentation about the current American Legion team was enjoyed by Rotary members when they met on Monday, July 25, 2022. His son, Cleveland, accompanied his father. Don is also the assistant varsity football coach, weight room supervisor and head coach for the American Legion baseball program. He and his wife Jessica are also certified foster parents. They have two children and presently have three foster children in their family.
Flaherty graduated from Ellendale High School in 2011. He played college football at Trinity Bible College graduating with a degree in elementary education and with a minor in coaching. He taught at the Hitchcock-Tulare School District before coming to Mobridge three years ago. He started coaching baseball in Mobridge the year of the COVID Pandemic. Most of his upper classmen on the American Legion team graduated this spring so this has been a building year with only a couple graduating in the next several years so the team should, with experience, get better in the next two years.
Flaherty also helps with the baseball teams in the Mobridge Youth Organization (MYO) with about 160 young people participating in that program. He said it gives kids something to do during the summer. He sees a bright future for baseball in Mobridge. The season is almost over with school starting soon but Flaherty said remaining games try to start at 5:00. He was asked about travel as most of the teams are a distance from Mobridge. He says his pickup is used to haul the equipment and cars to haul the players are driven by the older teammates.
Gary Steuck was present to claim the 50/50 pot. Rotary will conduct the monthly business meeting when they meet next Monday, August 1, 2022, at 12:00pm.
