HIGHLIGHTS: Chris Rock may have indirectly responded to Will Smith’s apology video in Atlanta on Friday, when he said that everyone wants to play a victim, and, “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
FULL STORY: On Friday, Will Smith put out a five-minute video, where he apologizes for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. It seems sincere, but it also took him almost SIX MONTHS to put out.
The video is titled “It’s been a minute,” and it HAS. Actually, it’s been about 244,000 MINUTES since the Oscars. Here are a few “highlights” from it . . .
Will says he didn’t apologize to Chris in his acceptance speech later that night because he was “fogged out” and “fuzzy” . . . and wasn’t thinking clearly.
He says he has reached out to Chris, but Chris’ people say he’s not ready to talk about it . . . and when that time comes, Chris will give him a call.
Will directly apologizes to Chris . . . Chris’ mother . . . Chris’ family, specifically Chris’ younger brother Tony. Will says he had a great relationship with Tony, and he realizes it’s probably now irreparable.
He says Jada did NOT tell him to do anything to Chris . . . and that she had nothing to do with it. He also apologizes to her, and his kids.
Will apologizes to his fellow nominees . . . and to everyone, really . . . he says, quote, “There’s NO part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment . . ‘I’m sorry’ isn’t really sufficient.”
He also says he’s “human” and he made a “mistake” . . . and that he’s, quote, “devoted and committed to putting light and love and joy into the world.”
(PROFANITY WARNING: Here’s the UNCENSORED video. There’s an S-word at the 5:09 mark.)
Chris has surely seen the video, too . . . but he hasn’t directly addressed it. However, he may have . . . INDIRECTLY.
At a show in Atlanta on Friday night . . . about 12 hours after the video was unleashed . . . Chris said, quote, “Everybody is trying to be [an effing] victim. If everybody claims to be a victim, then nobody will hear the real victims.
“Even me getting smacked by Suge Smith . . . I went to work the next day, I got kids.” He later said, quote, “Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face.”
(You probably get it, but the “Suge Smith” thing is a reference to former tough guy Suge Knight.)
