AUGUST 17, 2022:
The South Dakota Beef Industry Council (SDBIC) announced the winners of the Sturgis Beef Throwdown competitions during the 82nd Annual City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota on August 12, 2022.
This year’s Sturgis Beef Throwdown consisted of three categories: the Claim Your Steak Award, Claim Your Steak People’s Choice Award and the Sturgis Beef Throwdown Burger Battle Champions. The Claim Your Steak promotion started in June of 2022 and gave South Dakotan’s the opportunity to nominate their favorite steakhouse/restaurant. The top three nominated restaurants advanced to the final round as Celebrity Chef Justin Warner and ranchers traveled to the locations for a final taste and decision on the Claim Your Steak Champion. All nominated restaurants advanced for the chance to win the Claim Your Steak- People’s Choice Award.
The Sturgis Beef Throwdown Burger Battle took place on the Harley Davidson Rally Stage in downtown Sturgis on August 12th. Sturgis VIP sponsors were paired with South Dakota Beef Farmers and Ranchers and Media Partners to battle for their chance to be the 2022 Beef Throwdown Burger Battle champions. SDBIC Celebrity Chef, Justin Warner, was onsite to host and judge this year’s Burger Battle, along with representatives from the top 3 Claim Your Steak restaurants.
This year’s Sturgis Beef Throwdown Champions are:
- Claim Your Steak Champion: Alpine Inn & Restaurant – Hill City, SD
- Claim Your Steak People Choice: Lone Tree Steakhouse – Geddes, SD
- Sturgis Beef Throwdown Burger Battle Champions: Corey Levin and Terry Anderson (KBHB)

AUGUST 4, 2022:
Steakhouses with a Pierre connection are two of the three finalists in the Sturgis Beef Throwdown Claim Your Steak Competition.
During the month of June, the South Dakota Beef Industry Council asked the public to nominate their favorite place to enjoy a steak.
The top three nominees are:
- Mad Mary’s Steakhouse and Saloon– Flandreau
- Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse– Pierre
- Alpine Inn and Restaurant– Hill City
The Beef Industry Council will feature these three locations throughout the 82nd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Aug. 5-14, 2022. The top three locations were visited by celebrity Chef Justin Warner and some South Dakota beef producers to determine the 2022 Sturgis Beef Throwdown Claim Your Steak Champion.
Also, all 26 locations nominated are vying for the “People’s Choice” award. The SDBIC encourages the public to stop by any of the participating locations through August 11, then vote online for their favorite steak location. Steakhouses with central South Dakota ties among the 26 finalists are:
- Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse- Pierre and Mitchell locations
- Mancuso’s La Minestra- Pierre
- Mad Mary’s Steakhouse and Saloon- Flandreau
- Willow Creek Steakhouse- Highmore
The champion will be announced August 12 on the Harley Davison Rally Stage in Sturgis during the Sturgis Beef Throwdown Burger Battle competition (starting at 1:30 pm MT).
South Dakota beef farmers and ranchers produce a high-quality protein for consumers and the SDBIC encourages rally goers to eat beef while they travel through South Dakota.

JUNE 20, 2022:
June is National Steak Month and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council wants to hear about steakhouses or restaurants that make great tasting steak.
The “Claim Your Steak” campaign gives South Dakotan’s the opportunity to nominate their favorite place for a chance to be featured by the SDBIC throughout this summer. Consumers will also have the opportunity to win Beef Bucks and Beef Swag on SDBIC’s social media channels.
Suzy Geppert, SDBIC Executive Director, says steakhouses and restaurants play huge roles in promoting beef and in keeping rural communities thriving. She says SDBIC will highlight them using a beef roadmap for traveling around the state.
Claim Your Steak nominations are due by June 29, 2022. You can nominate your favorite South Dakota Steakhouse or Restaurant and answer a few brief questions about why they should be chosen to be featured by the SDBIC team as part of their Travel SD Summer Beef Campaign.
