There’s a new invasive species in the waterways of major cities: Bicycles. Bike sharing companies from China to Rome are struggling to remove their two-wheelers from rivers and canals. In Amsterdam, as many as 15,000 bikes are removed from canals annually.
“There’s lots of videos that you can see where people are tossing bikes into water and taking videos of it for fun and sport,” writer Jody Rosen said. But is it just for fun? Rosen speculates that with the increase of ride-share bike programs in cities, throwing bikes into rivers might be a reaction to this relatively new service.
