AUGUST 2022:
A a federal court judge has determined the punishment for a 31 year old man from Mission convicted of Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding.
Talon Bettelyoun, Sr. was sentenced to 11 months in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release, and ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $25.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on October 22, 2021, in Todd County, wherein Bettelyoun assaulted his domestic partner.
This case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.
APRIL 2022:
A 30 year old man from Mission will be tried in federal court after being indicted for Assault by Strangulation and Suffocation.
Talon Bettelyoun, Sr., pled not guilty to the Indictment.
The Indictment alleges that on October 22, 2021, in Todd County, South Dakota, Bettelyoun unlawfully assaulted an intimate partner by strangling and suffocating her.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
Bettelyoun was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.
