Legislative Task Force on Incarceration Construction Fund hoping to have suggestions for state lawmakers in January

The “Legislative Task Force on Incarceration Construction Fund” has been working from a consultant’s report that suggests spending up to $600 million for new prisons in Pierre, Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

Task Force committee member Representative Will Mortenson of Pierre says they are working on a core function of state government.

Mortenson says there is a critical need all across the state’s corrections system.

Mortenson says the report on expected prisoner incarceration numbers is shocking.

The task force may have one more meeting this fall to come up with directions to give lawmakers when the legislative session begins in January 2023.
