Based on September 1 conditions, South Dakota’s 2022 corn crop is forecast at 725 million bushels, down 2% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 5.25 million acres, down 4% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 138 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 207 million bushels, down 4% from last year. Acres for harvest, at 5.05 million acres, is down 6% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 41 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from last year.
Sorghum production is forecast at 13.7 million bushels, up 2% from last year. Area for harvest, at 205,000 acres, is down 2% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 67 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year.
Dry edible pea production is forecast at 98,000 cwt, down 25% from a year ago. Area for harvest, at 9,000 acres, is down 61% from 2021. Yield is forecast at 1,090 pounds per acre, up 520 pounds from last year.
