The Horse Nations Indian Relay Council’s 2022 Championship of Champions event starts today (Sept. 23, 2022) at the Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre.
Council president Calvin Ghost Bear says there are over 50 teams competing.
Ghost Bear says today and tomorrow are qualifying days.
To have qualified for the Championship of Champions, an Indian Relay team must’ve either won one of the 11 Horse Nations sanctioned races held prior to the finals or must have competed in at least two of the race events. Relay teams are made up of four warriors– a rider, holder, mugger, catcher– and three horses that compete on a half-mile circle racetrack.
Today’s relays start at 3pm CT, while tomorrow and Sunday’s relays begin at 2pm CT.
Admission cost $25 in advance (fees not included) or $30 at the gate each day (fees not included). Ages 5 years and under are admitted for free.
