The South Dakota House Committee on Appropriations voted unanimously Monday (Feb. 24, 2025) to kill a bill modifying tuition benefits for dependents and spouses of disabled and deceased veterans.
The vote against HB 1198 came after hearing opposition from the Board of Regents and the Bureau of Finance and Management.
Representatives approved amended legislation requiring the state Department of Social Services to contribute toward adoption home studies. Lawmakers also approved changes to teacher certification programs and passed a measure reducing state contributions to dual credit programs.
The committee deferred five additional bills to the 41st legislative day, effectively killing them for the session.
Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2025) is “crossover day” which means all House bills must be either killed or sent to the Senate, and all Senate bills must be killed or sent to the House.
