Two state agencies are providing $50-thousand dollars in financial support for the Horse Nations Indian Relay Council’s 2022 Championship of Champions this weekend (Sept. 23-25, 2022) in Fort Pierre.
The money comes from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the South Dakota Department of Tourism in support of tribal tourism efforts.
Indian Relay is a highly competitive, traditional Native American sport that consists of four warriors– a rider, holder, mugger, catcher– and three thoroughbred or quarter horses that compete on a half-mile circle racetrack.
Governor Kristi Noem says South Dakota values its tribal heritage, competition and love of horses. She hopes residents and visitors will take the time to learn more about the tribes’ history and culture and this event is a fantastic way to do that.
