BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota prison guard was fired over the suicide of a man who was serving life sentences for killing four people. Sgt. Deandre Adams violated corrections policy in failing to adequately check on Chad Isaak, according to a termination letter from the warden at North Dakota State Penitentiary. Adams was fired Thursday (Sept. 23, 2022). Warden James Sayler noted that Adams had received two previous written reprimands, the Bismarck Tribune reported. Isaak died July 31, 2022. An investigative report from the state Highway Patrol released last month found that Adams said he failed to adequately check on Isaak twice.
AUGUST 17, 2022:
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An investigation into the prison suicide of a man convicted in a 2019 quadruple slaying in North Dakota found that he had covered his cell window with cardboard and a guard failed to follow proper procedures in conducting required checks. The investigation report from the state Highway Patrol said 48-year-old Chad Isaak was found hanging in his cell July 31, 2022. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Isaak was appealing his convictions and life sentences for the killings of four people at a Mandan property management company. Prison spokeswoman Kayli Richards said Wednesday (Aug. 17, 2022) that Sgt. Deandre Adams has been placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation at the prison is completed. Adams declined comment. The Highway Patrol says no charges against Adams are expected.

(AP) — Authorities say a man who was serving life sentences for killing four people at a North Dakota business in what authorities say was one of the state’s most gruesome crimes has killed himself in prison. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a trooper was called to the state prison in Bismarck at around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday (July 31, 2022) in response to an inmate who had harmed himself. The trooper was told that 48-year-old Chad Isaak had been rushed to a Bismarck hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Isaak was appealing his convictions and life sentences for the April 2019 killings of four people at a Mandan property management company. No motive was given at the trial.

A notice of appeal filed Thursday (Jan. 20, 2022) by 47-year-old Chad Isaak says Isaak is questioning whether the evidence in the case was sufficient to support his conviction. A jury in August found Isaak guilty of killing RJR Maintenance and Management co-owner Robert Fakler and employees Adam Fuehrer, Bill Cobb, and his wife, Lois Cobb. The four were shot and stabbed on April 1, 2019, inside the property management company’s building in Mandan. Investigators say the victims were stabbed more than 100 times, total.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Jurors hearing the case against a North Dakota chiropractor accused of killing four people could begin deliberating as soon as Thursday. Attorneys for Chad Isaak rested their case Wednesday (Aug. 18, 2021) at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan after questioning six witnesses. Closing arguments are set for Thursday morning, after which the jury will get the case. Isaak is accused of fatally stabbing and shooting RJR Maintenance & Management co-owner Robert Fakler and his employees, Adam Fuehrer, and Bill and Lois Cobb, in Mandan on April 1, 2019. Isaak lives in a mobile home on property managed by RJR. No motive has been established in the case.

(AP) — An attorney for a man accused in the gruesome killings of four people at a North Dakota property management firm says the case amounts to a rush to judgment based on bad information that led to the wrong conclusion. Forty-seven-year-old Chad Isaak, of Washburn, is accused of killing RJR Maintenance and Management co-owner Robert Fakler and employees Adam Fuehrer, William Cobb and Lois Cobb on April 1, 2019. The business is located in Mandan. Prosecutor Karlei Neufeld said during her opening statements Wednesday that the evidence is like pieces of puzzle that will paint a clear picture of Isaak’s guilt when completed. Defense attorney Bruce Quick countered that police were under pressure to solve the case quickly and overlooked or ignored other possible suspects.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — More than two years after four employees of a North Dakota property management firm were slain, the man charged in their deaths is going on trial. Chad Isaak is a chiropractor and Navy veteran who lived in a trailer home run by the company. Company officials say they had few interactions with Isaak and have no idea about a possible motive. Police say they have overwhelming physical evidence tying Isaak to the slayings. Jury selection that starts Monday is expected to take up to two days, with as much as three weeks needed for the trial.

(AP) — The trial of a man accused of killing four people at a Mandan property management business has been delayed until August after more defense attorneys asked to be removed from the case. Chad Isaak of Washburn is accused of killing a co-owner and three employees of RJR Maintenance and Management in 2019. Police have not established a motive for the killings. Robert Quick was allowed to withdraw as lead defense attorney after Isaak filed a disciplinary complaint against him. Several attorneys hired by Quick as secondary counsel had been expected to take over the case, but on Monday (Aug. 9, 2021) they also asked to withdraw.
