Brookings Police and the South Dakota Highway Patrol made a methamphetamine and bust over the weekend (Sept. 25, 2022).
Brookings Police Detective Adam Smith says it started with a traffic complaint at about 9:30 Sunday morning. He says officers located the vehicle at a gas station and while speaking with the occupants, an officer observed indicators of criminal activity. A police dog at the scene detected the presence of drugs. A search of the vehicle uncovered about 30-pounds of suspected methamphetamine and one-pound of fentanyl. Officers also seized $5,100 cash. The estimated street value of the drugs is $150,000.
Arrested were 55-year-old Jose Gonzalez and 28-year-old Marquez Gonzales, both from California. They’re facing charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to court records, both men have previous criminal activity on their records.
