Pierre area senior citizens can add drumming to their list of activities this fall. Pierre’s Recreation Department is offering Golden Beats as part of its Season Citizens fall recreational programming.
Golden Beats uses drum sticks and large exercise balls as drums. The drumming and dance program is specifically designed for senior citizens. The program is proven to improve mental awareness while encouraging physical and social health.
“I know there are many benefits to the program,” said Mindy Cheap, Recreation Superintendent. “But for me, the best part is –it’s fun!”
The fall Seasoned Citizens programming also includes Zumba Gold, an upbeat dance-fitness workout for the Baby Boomer generation; Tai Chi, a gentle exercise routine that helps with flexibility, muscle strength and endurance; and Chair Yoga for improved flexibility, stress reduction, and joint health.
This session begins Monday, Oct.3 and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 21. There are no classes on Monday, Oct. 10.
Zumba Gold and Golden Beats are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. at the YMCA Multipurpose Room. The class alternates between the two programs each week. The session is free for Senior Center members and costs $20 for non-members.
