Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and escape plans all play a roll in fire safety

This is National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 9-15, 2022).

Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ian Paul says smoke detectors are a critical piece of fire safety.

Paul says fire extinguishers are another important tool for fire safety.

For those who may not have a smoke detector, Paul says you can get one from the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department.

Between firefighters and Dive Squad members, the Pierre Fire Department has roughly 70 members and Paul says anyone interested in joining is able to do that year-round.

This year’s designation marks the 100th anniversary of National Fire Prevention Week™ and the theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™.”
