Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force has determined there is no need for a deer harvest within city limits this year.
At its annual meeting, the task force learned:
-
car vs. deer crashes are down over 50% in 2022 compared to 2021
-
deer complaints dropped from eight in 2021 to four in 2022, none of which were community members reporting nuisance deer in yards or gardens
-
there’s no need for a deer count this year
Pierre Animal Control Officer Farley Zuber says the group will meet again next fall to reevaluate.
Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force includes a city commissioner and nine citizens appointed by the Mayor. The data provided to the group comes from the Pierre Police Department.
Pierre established the Deer Management Task Force in 2007 to administer an urban deer management program.
